InnoLith, a hemp-lime building block

From prototype to pavilionWall in Translation outside the Pinakothek der Moderne. Pavilion design: Park Associati, MCBW 2026. InnoLith began with a question: could hemp-lime do more than provide insulating infill? Together with Anton Scherer, I developed a block made from hemp shiv, lime, sand and gelatin at Prof. Niklas Fanelsa’s chair.
We tested mixtures, shape and load capacity using prototypes. A block sustained a load of up to five tonnes in compression testing. These prototype tests informed the further development of the material.
In May 2026, the material was used in Wall in Translation outside the Pinakothek der Moderne. Park Associati designed the installation for Munich Creative Business Week. Together with other students, we produced 200 blocks. Anton Scherer and I developed the material; Park Associati designed the pavilion.
About the project 
The block in useOffset blocks form seats and small recesses. Hemp fibres remain visible at the surface. 
Four ingredientsHemp shiv, lime, sand and gelatin form the basis of the mixture.
